Gasteria & Haworthia Care
Gasteria & Haworthia are exceptionally easy to care for, making them an excellent choice for both first-time plant owners and experienced succulent collectors. These resilient plants thrive with minimal attention and reward growers with attractive, long-lasting foliage throughout the year. They perform best in bright, indirect light or gentle morning sun, although many varieties will also tolerate lower light conditions indoors. Plant them in a well-draining cactus or succulent soil mix, allow the soil to dry between waterings, and avoid prolonged wet conditions to keep the roots healthy.
Planting & Container Size
When planting Gasteria & Haworthia, use a fast-draining cactus or succulent soil mix that allows excess moisture to escape quickly while providing plenty of air around the roots. Choose containers with drainage holes to prevent standing water, as Gasteria & Haworthia are sensitive to overly wet soil. A blend containing coarse sand, pumice, perlite, or fine gravel works well to improve drainage and promote healthy root development. Gasteria & Haworthia can be displayed individually to highlight their unique leaf patterns or grouped with other succulents, such as succulents and Aloes, to create attractive, low-maintenance container gardens. Once established, they adapt well to their growing environment and require very little attention.
Fertilizer
Gasteria & Haworthia are light feeders and require very little fertilizer to maintain healthy, attractive growth. During the spring and summer growing season, apply a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer or a fertilizer formulated for succulents and cacti every four to six weeks. Avoid over-fertilizing, as excessive nutrients can encourage weak, elongated growth instead of the compact, sturdy form that makes Gasterias so appealing. Fertilizing is generally unnecessary during the cooler fall and winter months when growth naturally slows.
Watering should be done carefully, allowing the soil to dry between waterings before adding more moisture. Water the soil directly rather than the leaves, thoroughly soaking the potting mix until excess water drains from the bottom of the container. Never allow the pot to sit in standing water, as consistently wet soil can lead to root rot. Gasterias are naturally drought tolerant and store water in their thick, fleshy leaves, making them much more forgiving of occasional underwatering than excessive moisture. Providing excellent drainage, moderate watering, and good air circulation will keep your Gasteria healthy and thriving for many years.

Indoors, Gasteria & Haworthia thrive in bright, indirect light and are among the easiest succulents to grow as houseplants. Their compact size, attractive leaf patterns, and slow-growing habit make them excellent choices for windowsills, desks, bookshelves, kitchens, living rooms, home offices, and other bright interior spaces. Many varieties tolerate lower light conditions better than most succulents, although they develop their best color, texture, and compact growth when provided with several hours of bright, filtered light each day. Their tidy appearance and year-round interest make them ideal for decorative containers, succulent arrangements, and tabletop displays.
Outdoors, Gasteria & Haworthia perform best in warm climates where they receive partial shade, filtered sunlight, or gentle morning sun with protection from the harsh afternoon rays. They are excellent additions to patios, lanais, balconies, courtyards, rock gardens, and shaded landscape beds, where their bold foliage provides lasting texture and contrast. Gasterias combine beautifully with Haworthias, Aloes, and other drought-tolerant succulents, creating attractive, low-maintenance plantings that require very little upkeep. Before You Plant Outdoors
At the nursery these plants are grown under 20-40% shade cloth with overhead irrigation which can cause white buildup on the leaves, this can wiped off with a damp cloth. If you plant in a brightly lit area you may experience leaf burn. It is best to acclimate this plant to its environment by keeping it outside and slowly moving it into a sunny area over a week or two to avoid stress before planting.

Before leaving, plants are inspected, watered, and pruned. Larger plants will be topped to 36" or 48" overall, depending on the variety, if necessary, to facilitate shipping. Your new plants' pot is then bagged to ensure that the soil stays in the pot and not loose in the box. Plants are tissue or kraft paper wrapped and generally secured in place with natural biodegradable peanuts. Plant growing zones listed are a general guide. We recommend checking your local microclimate and doing a bit of extra research on your new plants before planting outdoors. Patio zone recommendations are for summer enjoyment—depending on your winter temperatures, plants may need to be brought indoors for protection.
