Lg. Black Calabash Tree (amphitecna latifolia)

$45.99

Black Calabash Trees are a lush, tropical standout known for its dense canopy and bold garden presence. This smaller tropical tree gradually matures to around 30 feet tall, with a spreading crown that provides generous shade beneath its abundant, glossy green foliage. The thick branching structure creates a cool, sheltered space, perfect for understory plantings and layered tropical landscapes.
During the growing season, the tree produces striking, two-inch-long purplish-white tubular flowers that appear directly along the branches and trunk. These unique blooms are followed by smooth, shiny green fruits about four inches long. As they mature, the fruit develops a thin, hard shell enclosing numerous half-inch-long edible black seeds set within a mild, white pulp.
Thriving in warm climates with full sun to partial sun and well-drained soil, the Black Calabash Tree brings texture, shade, and botanical interest to tropical gardens, larger properties, and specialty collections. Its sculptural branching, glossy foliage, and unusual fruit make it both ornamental and intriguing in any landscape setting. USDA Zones 10–12
